About the golden 10 guilder Willem 1:
The golden tenner of William 1 was the largest gold coin circulating in our country in the early nineteenth century. The Willem 1 gold tenner is made of 900/1000 gold, weighs 6.72 grams and has a diameter of 22.5 millimeters. The obverse shows the image of King William 1, with the text "William 1 King of the Netherlands G.H.V.L. (short for Grand Duke of Luxembourg). The golden tenner of William 1 has a different image of the king than the golden five. In addition to the golden tenner, the following coins circulated in the Netherlands at the time:
- The half-cent William 1;
- Penny William 1;
- The five cent or nickel William 1 (silver);
- The ten cents or the dime William 1 (silver);
- The twenty-five cent or Willem 1 quarter (silver);
- The Willem 1 half guilder (silver);
- The William 1 guilder (silver);
- The two and a half guilder William 1 (from 1840);
- The three guilder William 1, minted through 1832, (silver);
- The five guilder Willem 1 (gold).
The golden tench of William 1 was minted from 1818 to 1840 in both Utrecht and Brussels. Today, the golden tenner is very popular among collectors as well as investors, although this is less so with the coins of King William 1 and William 2 due to the scarcity of the coins.
