Five guilder bill 1966 Vondel 1
In 1966, a five guilder banknote was issued for the first time by the Dutch Bank. Earlier, silver coupons had been issued by the Ministry of Finance. When the first fives came into circulation in 1966 many people thought they were counterfeit money, this was also because of the new design with the different colors and the word "FIVE" on the front. Besides the fives (1966 and 1973), four other bills are part of the legacy series:
10 guilder 1968 Frans Hals;
25 guilders 1971 Sweelinck;
100 guilders 1970 Michiel de Ruyter;
1000 guilders 1972 Spinoza.
The 1966 five-gilder bill was designed by the well-known designer Oxenaar, who was appointed by the Dutch bank to design a whole new revolutionary series of banknotes. The 1966 five guilder bill was replaced by a five guilder coin in 1988 and was withdrawn from circulation in 1995.
