Netherlands 100 guilder 1953 Erasmus PMG58 EPQ
Exceptional paper quality.
NVMH:121-1
Plomp:PL102a

A contiguous series of banknotes was introduced in the early 1950s. This was the first official legacy series, designed by Eppo Doeve. The 100 guilder bill has on the front the image of the philosopher Erasmus, who is known for his works such as "Praise of Folly. Also on the front are some symbols such as the inkwell, the hourglass and the quill. These symbols represent the spirit of Erasmus. The reverse side shows a bird rising (this symbolizes the resurrection of the Netherlands after World War II). The signatures on the bill are of DNB-President Holtrop and DNB-Secretary de Jong, and besides the 100 guilder Erasmus there are also the following bills with the series:
10 guilder Hugo de Groot;
20 guilders Herman Boerhave;
25 guilder Christiaan Huygens;
1000 guilders Rembrandt van Rijn
The 100 guilder bill featuring Erasmus was withdrawn from circulation in 1978, and was succeeded by the 100 guilder Michiel de Ruyter bill, which had already been put into circulation in 1970.
