It hasn't escaped anyone's notice: the announcement of a brand new The Lord of the Rings series: Rings of Power. The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power is set in the Second Era in Middle-earth, several thousand years before the events of The Hobbit and the first part of The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. On its premiere day, the series drew a whopping 25 million viewers, a record for streaming service Amazon. With the arrival of this new series, we are seizing the moment to step back in time. Therefore, by order of the Central Bank of Malta, the Royal Dutch Mint is minting two commemorative coins: a 2 ½ euro in coincard and a 10 euro in Silver Prooflike.

The Malta 2 ½ Euro 2022 'The Lord of the Rings' in coincard revolves entirely around The Lord of the Rings, one of the most successful franchises ever, based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien. These books revolve around the hobbit Frodo Baggins, who takes possession of a special ring. This is the instrument of the Dark Ruler Sauron, who does everything in his power to get the ring. Thus, Frodo Baggins and his friends are sent on an unprecedented adventure through Middle-earth.

Design
Op de voorzijde van de coincard ziet u de belangrijkste figuren in de franchise: op rechts hobbit Frodo Baggins, maar ook zijn compagnon Sam. Ook mag natuurlijk Gollum niet ontbreken. Verder vindt u op de voorzijde het bekende oog van Sauron, evenals de elf Arwen. Aragorn II, Gandalf en Galadriël zijn ook op de voorzijde te bewonderen. Rechtsonder staat de tekst ‘The Lord of the Rings’ en linksonder staat het jaartal 2022. Op de keerzijde van de coincard vindt u een afbeelding van het personage Legolas, gespeeld door Orlando Bloom.

The obverse of the coin shows in the center the White Tree of Gondor, the symbol of contitent Gondor which, according to its inhabitants, brought good luck. Around it is the text found on the ring. This text reads, "One Ring to rule all, one ring to find them, one ring that will bring them, and bind them in darkness. The reverse shows the logo of the Central Bank of Malta, the mintmark and the year of issue.
