Netherlands Jaap Eden Cycling Medal 2020 in coincard
Jacobus Johannes Eden (Groningen, Oct. 19, 1873) became one of the Netherlands' greatest sports legends in the late 19th century. Although that was more than 100 years ago, his extraordinary achievements are still widely recognized. After all, he was world champion in speed skating as well as cycling! The Royal Dutch Mint is therefore minting an official commemorative coin commissioned by the Ministry of Finance: the Jaap Eden Vijfje. As 2019 marks exactly 125 years since Jaap Eden became world champion of cycling, the Royal Dutch Mint is also issuing a special Wielrenpenning (cycling medal).
The design
The obverse of the medal shows Jaap Eden on his bicycle, ready to win the race. The reverse side shows various elements in beautiful typography as was used in advertisements and posters during Jaap Eden's time. Read back include "Jaap Eden," "World Champion," "125 years" and more. This detailed medal was designed by Juan Sanchez-Castano, modeler of the Royal Dutch Mint.
