Nederland 5 gulden 1944 Zilverbon.
Serie 1 letter.
NVMH:22-1a
Plomp:PL21.a1
During World War II, a five guilder silver note was again issued. This was not meant to be eventually exchanged for silver, but it was intended to make up for the shortage of change. This was because the value of the guilder had declined so much due to the occupation that all smaller-value bills wore out quickly and there was often no change for the fifty- or hundred-guilder bills that were frequently in circulation. The 1944 five-gilder silver note was the only silver note in Dutch history signed by Meinoud Rost - van Tonningen, who was both president of the Nederlandsche Bank and Acting Secretary General of the Department of Finance. The other signature on the silver note is by Oppel, Official of the Ministry of Finance. In addition to the five guilder silver note 1944, two more silver notes are available with the series:
– One guilder silver note Wilhelmina 1938
– Two and a half guilder silver note 1938
After liberation, the silver notes were replaced by coin bills with Queen Wilhelmina on them. It would eventually take another twenty years before a bill of five guilders would circulate.
