About the golden five of William 1:
The golden fiver of William 1 is the first five guilder coin in Dutch history. The fiver is made of 900/1000 gold, weighs 3.36 grams and has a diameter of 18.5 millimeters. The obverse shows the image of King William 1, with the text "William 1 King of the Netherlands G.H.V.L. (short for Grand Duke of Luxembourg). In addition to the gold fiver, the following coins circulated in the Netherlands at the time:
- The half-cent William 1;
- Penny William 1;
- The five cent or nickel William 1 (silver);
- The ten cents or the dime William 1 (silver);
- The twenty-five cent or Willem 1 quarter (silver);
- The Willem 1 half guilder (silver);
- The William 1 guilder (silver);
- The two and a half guilder William 1 (from 1840);
- The three guilder William 1, minted through 1832, (silver);
- The ten guilder Willem 1 (gold).
The golden fiver of William 1 was struck in two years:
- 1826 (te Utrecht);
- 1827 (at Utrecht);
- 1827 (at Brussels).
The Golden Fiver of William 1 is a special piece of Dutch history and therefore loved by collectors.
