The Anton Geesink Fiver is strictly limited!

Anthonius Johannes (Anton) Geesink (1934-2010) garnered worldwide fame when, 60 years ago, he became the first non-Japanese to win the world judo championship in the heaviest class. Many victories and awards followed, including two more world titles, twenty-one European championships and a gold medal at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. The Royal Dutch Mint therefore struck an official commemorative coin commissioned by the Ministry of Finance: the Anton Geesink Vijfje.

The traces of Anton Geesink
Anton Geesink also left his mark on the sport of judo outside the judo mat. He took several initiatives to make the complicated rules of judo more understandable. For example, the scoring was simplified. Geesink also devised the contrasting colors of the opponents. Whereas both judokas used to wear white during matches, nowadays one of the two wears a blue suit. This makes judo matches a lot easier to follow by the referee and the public. After winning his Olympic title, Geesink opened his own gym in Utrecht, where he taught himself. The street in which the school stands has since been called Anton Geesinkstraat. In Utrecht's District C, where Geesink was born, the judoka has been immortalized as a statue. And now the Utrechtian is being honored with his own commemorative coin!

Design
The Anton Geesink Vijfje was designed by artist Malin Persson. Judo is inextricably linked to Japan and this was a great source of inspiration for Persson. King Willem-Alexander is depicted on the front with a beard. His head is wreathed by the symbol of the Kodokan, the first judo school founded in Tokyo in 1882. The reverse shows Anton Geesink during his victory at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. With concentrated gaze, he holds his opponent in a grip. The circles symbolize the twenty seconds in which the hold must be held to win the judo match. In addition, the circles represent a rising sun. After all, Japan is also called the "Land of the Rising Sun.

Over the years, the Netherlands has produced many sports legends. Past years, sports icons Jaap Eden (2019) and Fanny Blankers-Koen (2018), among others, have already been honored with a commemorative coin. This year it is the turn of world-famous judoka Anton Geesink. The Anton Geesink Vijfje is being minted on behalf of the Ministry of Finance.
