The square nickel of Queen Wilhelmina is one of the few Dutch coins from the kingdom that is not round. The reason a square shape was chosen is because there was no way to make a round five-cent coin that would not look too much like a quarter. This had previously been done with "the night quarter. The nickel was designed in partially exotic style, and thus there are shells and pearls depicted in the design. The obverse shows an orange branch surrounded by pearls, and the reverse shows the value along with the year. The coin weighs 4.5 grams and has a diameter of 30.2 millimeters. The coin is part of the series of coins of Queen Wilhelmina and in addition to the square nickel, there are the following coins:
– Half-cent Wilhelmina;Cent Wilhelmina;
– Two and a half cents Wilhelmina;
– Five-cent "night quarter" Wilhelmina;
– Ten-cent Wilhelmina;
– Quarter Wilhelmina;
– Half guilder Wilhelmina;
– Golden Wilhelmina;
– Reichdaalder or two and a half guilders Wilhelmina;
– Five guilder Wilhelmina;
– Ten Guilders Wilhelmina.
The square nickel was withdrawn from circulation on Aug. 15, 1950, and replaced by the new bronze nickels with the portrait of Queen Wilhelmina, which had been circulated as early as 1948. The square nickel is unique because of its design and therefore much sought after by collectors.
– 1 cent 1948;
– 5 cents 1948;
– 10 cents 1948;
– 25 cents 1948.
The coins of Queen Wilhelmina are very popular with coin collectors, and are in great demand today.
