About the coin:
The three guilders of king William 1 was minted from 1818 through 1832, and was the highest silver coin in circulation in the Netherlands at the time. The coin was part of the decimal system, in which a guilder was made up of 100 cents. The 3 guilder is made of 893/1000 silver, weighs 32.3 grams and has a diameter of 40 millimeters. In addition to the 3 guilder, the following coins were also in circulation:
- The half-cent William 1;
- Penny William 1;
- The five cent or nickel William 1 (silver);
- The ten cents or the dime William 1 (silver);
- The twenty-five cent or Willem 1 quarter (silver);
- The Willem 1 half guilder (silver);
- The William 1 guilder (silver);
- The two and a half guilder William 1 (from 1840);
- The five guilder Willem 1 (gold);
- The ten guilder Willem 1 (gold).
The three guilder was minted during the kingdom only under King William 1 and was later replaced by a two and a half guilder coin. Today, the 3 guilder is popular among collectors. It is therefore a unique piece of Dutch money history.
