Juliana's silver knave
After World War II, guilders and rijksdaalders were replaced by paper currency bills. Because these wore out so quickly due to their relatively low value, the first guldens came into circulation in the early 1950s (1954) and the first silver rijksdaalders came into circulation in the late 1950s (1959). The silver rijksdaalders with the image of Juliana were minted from 1959 through 1966 (only in 1965 no silver rijksdaalder was issued). Juliana's rijksdaalder is made of 720/1000 silver, weighs 15 grams and has a diameter of 33 millimeters. In 1969, the silver rijksdaalders were replaced by a smaller nickel variant, which caused confusion during use. Therefore, stickers (with advertisements or other messages) were still sometimes applied to the nickel rijksdaalders to avoid confusion. The design of the image of Juliana (obverse) is by Ludwig Oswald Wenckebach, and under the image on the obverse there is a 'W'.
