Netherlands 2.5 gas token Harlingen
A gas token or gas coin is a coin used to pay for gas consumption in many municipalities until the 1950s (in some municipalities until the 1960s) of the 20th century. For this purpose, a special meter, a coin meter, was installed in the meter box, which was emptied by the meter reader. The coins were bought from coin machines placed in the neighborhoods by the municipal gas company. In Rotterdam, they were sold by water distilleries.

The purpose of the gas tokens was to prevent people from falling into excessive arrears with the gas company.
Unlike a vending machine, a coin meter did not have sophisticated equipment to check the token. There was no need for this: if counterfeit coins were found in the meter, people knew who was liable.
