The silver Julianatient
By the early 1970s, silver guilders and rijksdaalders were no longer in circulation. However, it was decided to issue several tens. In the 1970s, two tens were issued under Queen Juliana (1949-1980):
– The silver 'Netherlands Herrijst tenje' 1970;
– The silver 'Jubilee tenner' 1973.
The two silver tennies from 1970 and 1973 are made of 720/1000 silver, weigh 25 grams and have a diameter of 38 millimeters (the same as the Wilhelmina rijksdaalder, in other words). The 1970 ten was designed by Ludwig Oswald Wenckebach, and the 1973 ten was designed by C.E Bruyn and K. van Rood. The tens were issued as commemorative coins, but at the time they could also be used for payment, although this was sometimes difficult because a ten guilder coin was no longer common since the abolition of the gold tenner in the 1930s.
