Netherlands 1 Guilder 1918 Silver coupon
NVMH:02-3
Plomp:PL2.c1

After the outbreak of World War I, many Dutch people brought their banknotes and currency bills to the Nederlandsche Bank to exchange them for gold and silver coins. This created a shortage of coinage and the Dutch Bank had to work with the government to find a solution. Eventually it was decided to issue silver coupons to make up for the shortage of change. These could be exchanged for silver coins after being announced. The 1914 type of silver coupon was not secure enough against counterfeiting, so a new type of silver note was released in 1916. This bill contained a better watermark and was made of better abrasion-resistant paper. The 1916 silver note was issued through 1918 and was available with the following signature combinations:

- 1916: A. L. Kulemkamp-Lemmers (finance ministry official), Anton van Gijn (finance minister);
- 1917: A. L. Kulemkamp-Lemmers (finance ministry official), Marie Willem Frederik Treub (finance minister);
- 1918: A. L. Kulemkamp-Lemmers (finance ministry official), Simon de Vries Czn (finance minister).
In addition to the one guilder silver note 1916, the following bills of the series are also available:
Two and a half guilders 1916 silver note.
Because the five guilder coin was made of gold, the five guilder silver note was not much appreciated by the population and was therefore not widely used. After World War I, silver coupons were slowly replaced again by silver guldens and rijksdaalders.
