Juliana 1 guilder 1957 with knock Kampen
The silver Juliana guilder
After World War II, silver coin bills of one and two and a half guilders were issued in the Netherlands due to scarcity of silver. In the early 1950s (1954) the first silver guilders finally came into circulation, these guilders were smaller than their predecessor (6.5 grams of 720/1000 silver with a diameter of 25 millimeters). These silver coins therefore had to reduce the amount of small paper money, as the coin bills wore out too quickly. Silver guilders were issued from 1954 through 1967, switching to nickel in 1967 because it was a cheaper material. As a result, there are two types of 1967 guldens:
– Juliana's silver guilder;
– Juliana's nickel guilder.
The difference in the coins is easy to find in two ways. The nickel coins are magnetic and the silver ones are not, also the weight is different, a silver guilder weighs 6.5 grams and a nickel guilder only 6 grams. The design of the image of Juliana (obverse) is by Ludwig Oswald Wenckebach, and there is a "W" below the image on the obverse.
