History of the euro coin

On January 1, 1999, the euro was introduced and formed the currency of (most) Europeans from 2002. For the first 3 years it was minted only in preparation for the use of the euro. From January 1, 2002, euro coins and euro banknotes were put into circulation and from that day replaced national bills and coins, such as our Dutch guilder.

Why the euro coin?

One of the arguments for a common European currency was that the global market needed a common European currency. Also, the euro was to end fluctuating exchange rates. Furthermore, 1 European currency made it much easier to compare prices within Europe.
