Two hundred and fifty guilders 1985 Lighthouse
In the mid-1980s, a value not known to the Dutch population came into circulation, a 250 guilder bill. This bill was supposed to bridge the gap between the hundred and the thousand. This made it easier to exchange when large amounts were involved. The 250 guilder has a lighthouse, the lighthouse "Westerlicht" in Haamstede, on the front and a map of the Netherlands on the back. The lighthouse has a bright purple color and is unique in design, also because, like the fifty with the sunflower, it stands upright. The 250 guilder is part of Oxenaar's "huisje, boompje, beestje" series, besides the lighthouse there are also the:
Fifty Guilders 1982 Sunflower;
Hundred Guilders 1977 Snip;
The 250 guilder bill was not a common denomination, and therefore did not appear widely in payment transactions. It entered circulation in 1986 and was withdrawn from circulation with the advent of the euro in 2002.
