Description

Netherlands 1 Guilder Ministry of War

War Department, Old name for what is now called Ministry of Defense. Issued specially manufactured money to the military for use during exercises outside the Netherlands, intended for payment of purchases from the Dutch Military Canteen Service. Plastic coins were in use from 1951-1954.

The two highest values, of 100 and 500, were manufactured by the NV Luxor Plastics of Amsterdam, the 25, 10, 5 and 1 by the Hollandse knopenfabriek in Spakenburg. With the high denominations a defect occurred later on, upon which paper replacements were switched to. Besides the denominations of 1 and 5 guilders, one of 25 guilders was also used. They were printed at Joh. Enschede.

With the name "Dutch War Department," a form of paper money was used aboard the American ships "General Hersey" and "General Greely" transporting Dutch troops in 1950. Known are denominations of 5, 10, and 25 cents American Currency (Hersey) and a 5 cent American Currency (Greely).

Furthermore, the Ministry initiated various forms of paper money that were used aboard the troop-carrying Dutch ships (board money).
