Nederland 1 Gulden 1938 Zilverbon met Duitse stempel
NVMH:04-1b
Plomp: PL4.b
Stempel: BO2.C
In the late 1930s, due to the great tensions in Europe and the eventual outbreak of World War II, large numbers of silver coins were hoarded by the Dutch population. This created a major shortage of change, and silver tokens had to be issued again by the Ministry of Finance, just as in World War I. The silver coupons with the date 1938 were largely issued during the occupation, because all coins of one and two and a half guilders had to be surrendered to the occupying forces. The silverbon 1938 has the signatures of Jacob Adrian de Wilde (Minister of Finance) and Luijsterburg (Official of the Ministry of Finance). In addition to the 1938 silver note, the series also includes the following bills:
– Two and a half guilder silver note 1938
– Five guilder silver coupon 1944.
The 1938 silver coupon was finally withdrawn from circulation in September 1945, and was replaced by a 1945 coin bill with Queen Wilhelmina on it.
