Description
Europe 3 Euro 2019 VOC bill
Circulation:7500 pieces.
This Euro Special Note bill is dedicated to The Dutch East India Company (VOC).
The Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC, was founded in 1602 and played a major role in global shipping for nearly 2 centuries until 1800. The VOC was then the largest trading company in the world, and the VOC was the first company ever to have freely tradable shares. In the name of the Republic, the VOC was allowed to make treaties, fight wars and administer conquered territories.
During its nearly 200 years of existence, the VOC equipped about 4,700 VOC ships to Asia, including nearly 1,700 in the seventeenth and more than 3,000 in the eighteenth century. The VOC had a monopoly on overseas trade between the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands and the area east of the Cape of Good Hope and west of the Magellan Strait: the entire VOC patent area was known at the time as the East Indies. The VOC's actual trading area extended from the Cape of Good Hope to China and Japan. At the height of its power, the VOC employed around 25,000 workers worldwide.
Between 1498 and 1595, the spice trade in the East Indies was entirely in the hands of the Portuguese. The first years of the VOC invested heavily in a war fleet to gain a foothold in Asia. The VOC did this by attacking Portuguese merchant and warships and blocking ports. The start of the VOC coincided with the Golden Age: The Golden Age is a period in Dutch history that largely coincides with the seventeenth century.
The VOC established a trading network between the various trading posts in the Asian region. This intra-Asian trade ensured large VOC profits for many years. In 1619, Jan Pietersz. Coen captured the city of Jayakarta and founded Batavia there for the VOC. Batavia became the capital of the Dutch colony of the "Dutch East Indies. Batavia today is called Jakarta. When the Shogun of Japan closed his country to foreigners in 1641, the VOC was the only one granted permission to continue trading from the island of Dejima near Nagasaki.
The VOC owned numerous factories. A factorij was a settlement in another country that acted as a fulcrum for overseas trade, for example:
Cape Town South Africa was more of an obligatory port of call and refreshment station,
Mocha because of the coffee,
Coast of Coromandel because of textiles,
Colombo because of the cinnamon,
Calicut because of the silk,
Ambon because of the cloves,
Formosa because of the skins,
Thirteen Factories in Canton, China, because of tea,
Dejima was the Dutch trading post in Japan from 1641 to 1859 because of the export of silver, copper, porcelain and lacquerware.
Within the Asian factories and the territory it controlled, the VOC regulated administration and justice. Today, the archives of the VOC are considered world heritage sites.
Cornelis Tromp
The back of the Euro Special Note features Cornelis Tromp. Cornelis Tromp (1629 -1691) was the second son of Maarten Harpertsz. Tromp, the famous Dutch mariner and lieutenant admiral in the Dutch navy. Cornelis Tromp eventually became commander-in-chief of the Danish and Dutch fleets.
Since 1622, the VOC worked regularly with the Admiralty colleges of the Republic (the "navy"). Warships accompanied merchant ships, and the VOC provided ships for the war fleet. Tromp participated in many naval battles led by Michiel de Ruyter against the English. The English wars were caused by rivalry between the Republic and England in trade. After the death of Michiel de Ruyter, Cornelis Tromp was appointed lieutenant admiral general of the Republic on Feb. 6, 1679.
